Anyone who wants to learn what to do during an evacuation or any other workplace emergency can take the Emergency Response (BHV) course at Invistra. You will learn what actions to take, when to take them, and how to act effectively to save lives.
As for personal qualities and competencies, it is helpful for an emergency responder to be physically present at the workplace, able to remain calm under pressure, and capable of working in a structured way. You should be willing to play an active role when unexpected situations occur, taking responsibility for the safety of colleagues and visitors at your work location — and providing first aid when necessary.
You don’t need any specific prior education to take the Emergency Response (BHV) course or to start working as an emergency response officer.
The course consists of two parts: theory and practical training.
The theoretical part covers how to provide (urgent) first aid and how to act in case of fire or evacuation. It includes general knowledge questions, such as definitions and key figures, as well as scenario-based questions to test your understanding of real-life situations.
The theory section concludes with an exam that demonstrates your knowledge is at the required level.
The practical day focuses on performing life-saving actions. You will learn how to respond in case of a fire, how an evacuation should be carried out, and how to communicate effectively during emergencies including who to contact. You will also learn how to operate an AED. All these practical situations and actions are actively practiced during the training day.
The Emergency Response (BHV) course can take place either at your own company location or at Invistra’s training facility.
Choosing an in-company course allows the training to be fully tailored to your workplace, procedures, and specific risks.
If you prefer, you’re also welcome to attend the course at our own location, where all practical facilities are readily available.
The basic Emergency Response (BHV) course at Invistra’s location takes two days. It consists of both a theoretical and a practical part. The theoretical section can also be completed through e-learning, either at your workplace or at home.
The refresher BHV course takes approximately six hours in total. For in-company training, we visit your company for one day, during which the theory and practical exercises are tailored as much as possible to your location and specific company characteristics.
As a guideline, you can expect the cost for an in-company training to be just over one thousand euros (excluding VAT).
For more information about the prices of BHV courses or individual components – such as the BHV resuscitation module or BHV certificate – please refer to our list of rates.

The validity of your Emergency Response (BHV) certification (including your BHV card) is one year.
Even more important than the expiry date is keeping your knowledge and skills up to date. This means regular practice is essential — not only reviewing the material but also performing the life-saving exercises.
During the refresher exam, you must demonstrate both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in order to renew your BHV certification for another year.
During the basic course, participants start by learning the essential theoretical knowledge. This foundation is then applied and practiced during the practical day of the course. The refresher course assumes that the basic course has already been completed and that both the theoretical and practical components were passed successfully. While the theory can be reviewed independently, the refresher course is essential for every emergency responder to maintain and practice their practical skills.
